Perimenopause and Protein: What the Research Actually Says

Why protein needs get more attention in perimenopause and menopause nutrition guidance, and how Plait builds it into your plan instead of adding it as an afterthought.

Protein comes up constantly in perimenopause and menopause nutrition conversations, often without much explanation of why. The short version: muscle mass tends to decline with age regardless of hormonal stage, and the hormonal shifts of perimenopause can accelerate that process for some women, which is part of why protein-forward eating shows up so often in guidance for this stage.

That is a broad pattern, not a promise about your specific body. What actually changes for you depends on where you are in the transition, your existing diet, and factors no app can see without you telling it.

Where the guidance comes from

Plait checks its perimenopause and menopause targets against The Menopause Society's published position statements, its 2022 statement on hormone therapy and its 2023 statement on nonhormone approaches. These are the professional body's own guidance, not Plait's independent research, and Plait is not affiliated with The Menopause Society.

What about soy?

Soy isoflavones come up often in relation to hot flashes. A meta-analysis found a modest effect on hot flash frequency and severity, modest being the operative word: it is a real, small finding, not a dramatic one, and it is worth stating that plainly rather than oversold.

Plait's plan builds protein in as a default priority through perimenopause and menopause, alongside bone and heart-minded choices, and tracks energy, mood, sleep, weight and cycle together so a pattern across them is visible rather than hidden in four separate places.

This is nutrition guidance, not a prescription. Talk to your own clinician about what is right for you. Not medical advice.
